A visit to Chichester West Sussex

During a short stay in Chichester last October for my photographic Exhibition ” The Capital City, Valletta “, I could not miss some time alone with my camera, so on two occasions I woke up early to get some clean misty shots.

I must admit the old part of the city is also a nice attraction and can’t wait to return.

I am still processing all the shots taken so there will be more to come especially ones of the Pier.

Changing Colours

“Change is the only constant”

Indeed change is an everlasting constant and whilst travelling through Sicily for a few days in October I realised how the environment can change in a relatively short moment.

The clouds moved and with them a profusion of new shades, new tones and a palette of colours  that every photographer would have dreamt.

There, watching all these changes happening in blink of an eye, all these variables so independent but working together to create a symphony, a subject that never seizes to inspire.

It was not one thought but many that caused my self to act in a different way and move away from any conventional way of shooting this incredible show.  The bright colours and the way they morphed into each other left nothing more but an ocean of ideas, the only problem being how to handle all of them at the same time.  Not even thought was enough to register every single burst of stimulus.

Then blackness, a black so deep that light seemed to be totally absorbed and remained un-reflected from the sharp surface that had flooded the sarrouding. It was this blackness that compelled the surroundings to survive in such a way, keeping balance between life and sudden death.

It is interesting to know that most of the trees surrounding Mt. Etna are dependent on an eco-system based on height like most other mountains.  It is also good to know that some of the trees face sudden incineration when the heart of the mountain expels molten rock.  However so, they remain there standing up, still marking their presence, a natural monument that clearly shows how things can change in a blink.

Inspirations in Sicily

My last visit to Sicily was quite an inspirational one for the colours that we found there were mind boggling.  The diversity of subjects was just great even though Malta happens to be just a few Kilometres away the  subjects varied widely.  I have been captured by this technique with camera in motion to create surreal patterns from static subjects, not to forget symmetrical ones too.

These are some of the shots taken during a 4 day trip with some other photographer friends at MIPP and partners.

The Next Level

In a recent visit to Sicily, I could not ignore the reality of change.  With that in mind I wanted to move along the trail and find a way to express it through a non conventional shot, only to realise I ended up into something bigger than I expected.

I am now looking into another dimension in photography which has dragged me through for 4 days of intense experimentation with subjects through movement.  The result is an endless set of patterns warped and curved in way that is fully controlled whilst I am shooting a long exposure shot.

It is really like painting with the camera.

All preparations done for the upcoming Valletta exhibition in Chichester

image

Valletta in Black and White is ready to go.

Within a weeks` time the exhibition kicks off and for a week the Butter Market in Chichester will host the Valletta exhibits known as “La Capitale in chiaroscuro”.

Although the preparation for such an event is tiring and the co-ordination list between prints, mounting, setup and many other logistical variables is never ending, I still feel the urge to do more of the kind.

This is a great opportunity to portray more of my culture, more of the similarities present on our island with other  countries, and also networking with other artists sharing common ideas.

A great thanks goes to the friends in Chichester who have supported me in the preparation and setting up of this event and for  Alexei Dingli who connected me with our friends in the UK.

I look forward for this event and more to come.  Next year shall bring new ideas, new subjects and who knows maybe new countries to exhibit in.

Between Life and Death

Whilst shooting in Paris I had this audio visual in mind and finally it has made it to the real world.  For quite some time I have been wondering what other mediums I could use in conjunction with Photography.  This is my first attempt into making something a little different but at the same time keeping it simple and let the image speak for itself.

Aerial shots

Flying over Malta with good weather and crystal clear skies.  I could not resist the temptation of recording our homeland from a different point of view. great views of Valletta, the grand harbour and the surrounding fortifications.  What a great museum we live in.

Playing in Darkness

Playing in night time when darkness falls with available lighting, making the best out the situation.

The streets of Paris

Another set of captures in the streets of Paris and the whereabouts.  Most of these are the work of spontaneous however I was looking specifically for the essence of Paris, the every day life as no Parisian have seen it.   I wanted to focus on the people and their doings but also on their surroundings that probably get ignored and taken fore granted.

Paris

Paris is one of the cities I will definitely never forget.  The architecture, the streets and the history gave me enough subject to ho haywire.  I focused mainly on street photography and Paris is full of character for this.  Grabbing all sorts of subjects and give my attention to a variety of inspirations from buildings to people running in the streets, to cemeteries.  Paris gave me so much energy and hope to give it back through an exhibition or audio visual.

Japan world of colours

Travelling from Tokyo to Nagano, from Hiroshima to Kyoto then to Jigokudani.  Every place has its own marvel, its own character, full of inspiration and influence.  We ran from one place to another with every stop tasting all the different foods that each prefecture has to offer, last but not least the people so very polite and organised.  The place so optimised and clean.  I will be adding more photos as I go along through the wonderful experience I had in this country.

Paris 2010

As I go along I realize that I have many small projects of different categories which I will be working on an ” on and off ” basis.  These works are worked upon as I go along and depends mostly on the mood I am in.  So the diversity of works in here will show my current raison detre.

Valle Di Ledro

In August we visited Valle Di Ledro in Lago di Garda. This place is pure magic.
